Fairytales don’t always have a happy ending.
As kids, we would watch these movies and read these books about a princess being recused by the prince and happily ever after. Or about a king slaying a dragon to save the kingdom. But, what happens when the princess doesn’t love the king from which she was rescued or what if the dragon was never truly evil?
In this story, a princess who seemingly has it all is about to be married, but a secret follows her like a dark shroud, one from which she cannot escape. An outcast magic bursts inside her and her betrothed is one she doesn’t truly love. However, before the ceremony can commence, she loses control of her powers and all is revealed.
Upon discovering her dark secret, her stepmother transforms her brothers into cranes and holds their lives in her hands, threatening the princess with every move.
So to save her brothers and reclaim her right to her powers, she must venture into the unknown and ally with forces uncertain, such as a paper bird, a loose cannon of a dragon and her betrothed, which she fled at the altar.
Based on Chinese mythology, this story brings to life the tales of the past in an epic romance, fantastical and whimsical story, about a girl who learns to break free from society's confines, embrace her power, and fight for the ones she loves.
If this sounds intriguing, give Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim a read!!
